Decluttering Before Your Relocation

December 21, 2020

There are a lot of companies out there that can handle both long-distance and short-distance relocation projects. The experts here at Augusta Movers can take care of both the packing services as well as the transport of your items, all at an attractive rate. One thing that is common across all moving companies rates however is the cost per box or filled truck during your move. There is no way to get around these costs but one thing you can do to help cut expenses is to declutter ahead of moving day. If you are at a loss as to how to get started, our suggestions may help with the process.

Create A List

Make a list of all of the items that you must have in your new location. Next, list out the items that hold sentimental value. Lastly, list out the things that you want to take, but may not be essential. Start your packing from the top of the list and move down. This will help you get rid of things you really don’t need while ensuring essential items are packed first. Depending on how early you start packing, you can go ahead and box them up as soon as possible. Make sure the things you need right away are packed last while those that will be used later are packed first.

Sentimental Items

Pack your sentimental items and your family collectibles together. Depending on the size or importance of some of these, you may want to pass them along to other family members. Once you have curated your collection, pack them away, and label the box clearly. This may be a box you want to pack with your fragile items or even to carry with you personally during the relocation.

Organizing Your Boxes

As you pack boxes in preparation for your move, it is important to stay organized. Pick a spot in your home that won’t be disturbed until you are ready to move. As you pack and label boxes, place them in that room to keep them organized. You can also tape a list of items to each box, so you can keep track of what’s inside.

Organize Your Kids Rooms

Children tend to collect a lot of clutter. It is important to ask your kids to get involved in sorting out the things they want to keep and the ones they want to leave behind. It can create a lot of stress if you are choosing which items to leave behind, but having them choose their treasures can make things much easier. Old items can be donated, sold, or if they are no longer functional, thrown away.

Manage Your Cleanup

Once you decide to get rid of things, go ahead and get them out of the house. This can be via selling them, giving them away, donating them, or even throwing them out. Make sure you always keep your home clean and tidy to avoid packing clutter you originally planned to leave behind.
