Post-Holiday Declutter in Preparation for your Move

January 17, 2018

Now that the holiday festivitieshave wrapped up for the season, it’s a great time to take inventory of you and your families’ possessions- both new and old.  This is especially true if you are moving, as moving day will be so much easier the less items you have to move.  Here are some useful ideas to help you declutter after the holidays.

Christmas can most definitely invite clutter.  Lots of new gifts, decadent treats, holiday décor…..and if you have children, the mountain of toys that often accrues around this time of year can seem insurmountable.  Invite your children to go through their toys and donate some of their less favourite ones.   Discus with them the importance of giving to those in need.  Explain that not all children have so many toys, and by giving some to a thrift store or charity less fortunate families will have the opportunity to access toys that they may not have been able to afford otherwise.  Not that it helps with clutter in the house, but giving a new, unopened toy to a toy drive is a wonderful gift, and will help teach our children to be kind and generous.

There are usually lots of goodies and edible treats left over after Christmas.  Bring some to your place of work and share the joy.  You could also share with your doctor’s office, favourite hair salon, mechanic, etc.  The possibilities are endless!  This will help to clear your countertops while keeping your waistline trim as an added bonus!

Consider what holiday décor you absolutely love.  Are you keeping some out of obligation or sentimentality that you really aren’t a huge fan of?  Take a picture of such items, and then donate them to charity.   Holiday décor is only used once a year, so it makes sense to trim down in this department- especially before moving.  Going forward, using natural decorations such as pine boughs and dried berries etc bring an authentic vibe to holiday décor, and can be composted once the season ends rather than stored.

For items that aren’t newly acquired and have been in your possession for some time, ask yourself about each item if it’s something you use regularly.  If it’s not, consider finding another home for it.  Seldom used items take up valuable space, and more likely than not can be borrowed on the rare occasion you may need them.

So as you begin to pack for your move at this time of the year, keep in mind you are heading into a fresh new start for 2018.  Rid yourself of items weighing you down, and you will feel so much better for it.
