Surviving a New Years Day Move – Right after the Holidays!

Moving to a new home at any time of the year is hectic- but during the holiday season, moving is taken to a whole new level of business. There are some tips and tricks to help you through, though, and preserve your sanity throughout the busiest time of the year.

With all the business the holiday season holds, it’s important to book your moving company early. There are more holiday hours to take into consideration this time of the year, so make sure your contracts are signed and moving truck is booked. Make sure it’s discussed what hours your movers will be working during your move, as over the holidays many companies have reduced hours.

Keep holiday décor to a minimum. Only put out a few of your most cherished holiday items. Pack the rest up to move to your new home. You will save time and stress by limiting your décor.

Stock up on supplies like boxes, packing tape, etc., early on, and start packing everything you can before the holiday rush hits. By doing most of the packing prep work early, your holidays won’t feel so frantic. And hey, it never hurts to have extra packing tape around for wrapping presents!

To avoid losing important items, ensure your boxes are well labeled with their contents. There are a lot of extra boxes and bags and presents around at this time of year, so make sure that Nintendo gaming system you want to move with you doesn’t end up going out the door as a donation to the toy drive by mistake! Use packing tape and label every box with the word “MOVE” in large letters with a summary of the contents listed beneath. Keep gift bags and wrapping paper well away from any boxes you’ve packed to move to avoid a mistake!

Although it may be your tradition to host a large New Year’s bash every year, this is not the year to have it in your home. In fact, with all there is to think about with moving, it may be a good idea to ask someone else to host this year. Promise everyone to have a belated New Years/Housewarming party once you’ve settled into your new home.

So although moving during the holidays isn’t the most ideal time to move, hopefully early preparation allows for some peaceful moments amidst the hustle and bustle. Happy New Year!
