Mistakes To Avoid During a Long Distance Move

While moving from one home to another is already a lot to deal with, doing that long distance is even harder. Since the distance between one home and the other is larger, the risk of running into more severe problems is bigger.

Luckily, our experts here at Augusta Movers know what to do to avoid these issues as best as possible. With our advice, you can better understand the common mistakes people make during this type of move so you don’t end up repeating them. To learn about some mistakes to avoid during a long distance move, check out the information we have come up with below.

Start Preparation Earlier Than Normal

While a standard move requires preparation, long distance moves arguably require even more preparation. The reason for this is quite simple— a mistake of leaving something during a regular move can be fixed easier than if you leave something during a long distance move. In addition, long distance moves will usually require more time, more effort, more assistance and (pretty much) more of everything. Since there is more to do, there will be more to plan for. Some of the things you can do to prepare include:

  • Setting everything up in your new home. This way, your new place is ready when you get there. This includes making sure the power, hydro and internet are all set up properly. This also means setting up your address for the mail, changing insurance if needed, etc.
  • Coming up with a to-do/item list. The chances of you forgetting something during your move are much lower if you come up with lists to check off. This includes a list with tasks as well as a list with things that need to be moved and cannot be left behind.
  • Keep track of your fragile items. Since a long distance move can be a bit of a bumpier ride to the destination in question, making sure all of your fragile items are properly packed and taken care of is important. Also be sure to let your movers know about these items before the process begins.
  • Have a separate bag with your valuables & essentials. This includes things such as your keys to the new home, wallet, phone, any documents, etc. This will also include essentials that you can use once you arrive at your new home (toilet paper, towels, toiletries, linen, etc).

Don’t Be Afraid To Throw Things Away

We know how difficult it can be to get rid of things in your home. After all, many of these things may have held sentimental value at some point. Even so, holding onto too much stuff is never a good idea. This is especially true when you’re moving long distance.

To many, a long distance move signifies a new start. One of the best ways to further emphasize this new start is by getting rid of some of your extra stuff during your move. The best way to get rid of stuff that you’re unsure about is to ask yourself whether or not you A) truly use it and B) truly need it. If you answer no to both of these questions, chances are it’s better part ways with it.

Work With The Right Company

While it can be easy to choose the first moving company you come across, you’re doing the right thing by researching each company you’re interested in and finding the best fit. When you want to be certain you’re choosing the right business, always make sure they offer good deals without sacrificing the quality of their services. You want a team that knows what they’re doing and has years of experience in the industry. You also want to be sure you can communicate with the people at the business in a manner that helps your moving situation.
